Nassau Hub
Traffic Solutions

This page talks about traffic and transit solutions for my proposal for the Nassau Hub with a world class football stadium being the centerpiece

The Nassau Hub is home to various commercial, cultural, educational, and government centers that are right in the heart of Nassau County. The Nassau Hub area includes Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Nassau Community College, Museum Row, Hofstra University, downtown Hempstead, downtown Mineola, downtown Westbury, Westbury Plaza, Roosevelt Field Mall, and the Nassau County Government Complex. Despite all of these important places being situated in a small distance of one another, the Nassau Hub’s infrastructure and its limited transit options makes the area dependent on automobile travel, causing traffic concerns regarding redevelopment efforts regarding the Nassau Coliseum site due to the already existing traffic congestion in the area. Nassau County has been looking at ways since the early 2000's to connect all the major activity centers within the Nassau Hub to encourage transit usage and create more compact development.

Nassau County Transit Initiative
Bus Rapid Transit Routes

The Nassau County Transit Initiative had a public meeting on January 18th, 2023 regarding a proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system connecting various activity centers withing the Nassau Hub to address the traffic and transit concerns currently affecting the area in a cost effective and innovative manner, enhance mobility, and improve the quality of life in the area. A proposed initial operating segment (IOS) regarding a premium bus/Bus Rapid Transit route connecting the Hempstead Multimodal Station to Roosevelt Field Mall was discussed as a proposal to build ridership and brand the system. Also discussed at the meeting were alternative bus routes that would connect the Nassau Coliseum site to an LIRR Main Line station with the choices being Mineola and Westbury. Various alternatives were discussed with Mineola having 3 recommended alternatives and Westbury having 4. A link to the PDF file showing the routes discussed at the meeting is listed here.

Mitchel Field LIRR Station

One of the biggest problems with the Nassau Hub is that there is no direct way to get there by train. The Garden City-Mitchel Field Secondary line stopped transporting passengers in 1953 and current development surrounding the area makes extending the tracks impossible. However, it is possible to use the Mitchel Field line for passenger use for a redeveloped Nassau Hub. My solution includes adding another line of tracks next to the existing tracks and building a new LIRR station on Endo Blvd which will act as both a new LIRR station and a bus stop for the recommended BRT routes mentioned at the Nassau County Transit Initiative meeting from 1/18/23. To not disturb the neighbors, a pair of tunnels would be built over the tracks pictured here. Passengers coming in from NYC can take the train and be dropped off at the Garden City LIRR Station where trains coming from Mitchel Field will come pick them up.
